The theme of the Biennial: ‘7 gates in the city of Skopje’, was chosen based upon the Myth of the 7 holes in the head of a giant. With these holes the 7 entrances to the city were meant; the eyes, the ears, the nostrils and the mouth. These openings are our gates to the world, and the world’s entrance into us.
I went looking for 7 gates in contemporary Skopje, selecting them based upon their openness; for instance a gateway to another neighborhood, a transition between different nationalities or an open form of architecture. In order to do that, I went through Skopje to visit 7 locations with my observation-cabin. My cabin had 7 windows and I used each of the windows to observe a different location.
At each location I made a drawing of what I observed through the window.
In the drawings, my body is visible at the bottom edge of the paper, as seen from the corner of my eyes. Each drawing contains my observations of the place and time it was made; conversations, events that took place and my thoughts and feelings during that time. This way every drawing represents a certain place at a certain time in the city of Skopje.
The cabin was not only for observing; it was also a place where the people of Skopje came to visit me out of curiosity. Drawings made on previous days, were presented horizontally in the windows of the cabin, so that the visitor could take the same position in front of the drawing as I had when I made it.
